Urologist prescribed antibiotics without determining UTI

Post a new topicby 2BsMom on Thu Jun 18, 2009 2:54 pm

The urologist I saw yesterday prescribed 30 days of antibiotics (Nitrofurantoin Macro) with 12 refills, stating I may need to be on this for life. This was prior to examination or taking a urine culture. I went to see him because I had been treated for a UTI two months ago and my primary care physician recommended I see a Urologist It took this long to get the appointment. My symptoms, frequent urge to urinate, with uncomfortable pelvic pressure had lessoned, for the most part, once the infection cleared. It doesn't make any sense to me that this urologist would insist on antibiotic treatment before determining if I still have a UTI He even indicated that this could be either interstitial cystitus or overactive bladder Why then antibiotics without confirming infection? Also, he said I needed to undergo a cystoscopy I asked him if that would be done with anestesia, his glib answer was no they did not use anestesia for this procedure. When I explained that I was told by others that it would be painful, his answer was he would prescribe valium for me to take prior to arrival at the facility. I'm scared to death about undergoing cystoscopy without anestesia. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm new to this forum and would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Since this is August you've probably already taken care of your issue but if not, I can't imagine a doctor giving a cystoscopy without anesthesia. I would get a second opinion. Here's what it says on this site. Good luck.

"Cystoscopy may be performed in a physician's office, under local anesthesia, or as an outpatient procedure, under sedation and regional or general anesthesia."
