stepped on sewing needle causing infection

Post a new topicby sperry on Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:54 am

8 weeks ago I stepped on a sewing needle that broke off inside the foot. I went to a podiatrist. The podiatrist performed surgery to get the needle out. He stitched it up afterwards and put me on antibiotics and I was given crutches. One week later the podiatrist took the stitches out and said everything was looking good. Soon after I noticed my foot starting having discharge and was swelling. I went back to the doctor because of this, and he said that the insert in my boot was cut incorrectly by his office. This caused the wound where the stitches were to open somewhat. They changed my antibiotics to heavier antibiotics, I have had two prescriptions of those. 7 weeks later it finally started getting better, and I can walk w/o my crutches. The swelling appears as if it is starting again and I need advice so that this will all get better.

I am no wound specialist but my wife does a lot of chronic would care. As you have already experienced the wound is not fully healed until it is fully healed. Extremities can be hard to heal up due to circulation. If it appears to be swelling again it may be infected again. Stay on top of it. You should be getting some fairly specific wound care instructions. Follow those and take any medications as prescribed. Still, it can reinfect.

BTW when I was about 19 a broke a sewing needle off into the end of my big toe. My dad flamed up a another needle and a set of tweezers and got that bugger out. Had no problems with the wound. But I was 19 and as we all know I was immortal then.
