underlying stress?

Post a new topicby livingwith on Tue Jul 08, 2008 4:00 pm

I’ve recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea, yes I’m about 50# heavier than ideal, but after using the mask system as diagnosed/prescribed for a month or two I am still quite un-rested upon waking for the day.
I’ve also been dealing with panic/anxiety & depression for a decade plus. my Dr. sent me to a psychologist and after a couple of sessions, not really ‘doing’ anything besides history/update/etc. I’m still ragged in the a.m. On weekends, I’m...Read the full article

How long before you were officially diagnosed with sleep apnea, did you experience difficulties with sleeping? Do you know of a particular reason why this may have happened? It's very unfortunate that when things aren't good in our lives, the symptomps are many, and can sometimes be very frustrating, as well as plain scary.
I'm going through some stressful times myself right now, and frankly I feel that there have been few periods in my life that have not had some elements of stress present. During periods like that, I have experienced difficulties with sleeping, such as waking up at three am, and just staring at the wall for several hours. When I went to bed the last week, I experienced something new. I went to bed, and was just half asleep when my boyfriend came in, which disturbed my falling asleep process a little. However since I was very tired I felt the sleepiness washing over me again. As I was about to fall asleep, it was as though my body just snapped me out of it, just wouldn't allow me to fall asleep. Not only did that go on until well over three am, but every time it happened my heart was racing, kind of like when you get scared or nervous and your heart starts to pump in your chest.

I can't really explain how unpleasant that was, but I am pretty sure it is connected to all the negative feelings I have in my life right now. I have no idea how to deal with everything, but I'm going to try, AND, I'm going to start going to the gym on a regular basis. It really helps me to become more positive, and feel better about myself, and my life in general.

hi y'all, i've just read both posts from july. i've been writing things in the delayed sleep phase syndrome blog because i believe that is what i suffer from. i was just going through some of the conditions listed and read about both of you, your problems with sleep. I am an RN and many years ago, i started doing that same thing, just about to fall asleep and would instantly wake up and my heart would be pounding. i finally saw a cardiologist who was a guy i had worked with for many years and found out that i had an electrical problem with my heart and that caffeine really set it off. i never have drank a lot of coffee, but i drink a lot of dr pepper. he told me i had to quit drinking soft drinks, all of them. well, i did. i went cold-turkey and had headaches so bad i thought i was going to die. after about 3 months, they started to lessen. now, i drink one dr pepper in the morning and that is all. it's an addiction, i swear it is, just like smoking or any drug. well, since i now know what to relate the heart pounding to, i don't dare drink any soft drinks about 6 or more hrs before bed, ever. sometimes that is hard when you have kids in the car and your on vacation and stopping at fast food places all the time, but i have to pay attention to how the caffeine makes me feel. anyway, it was just a thought. maybe a visit to a cardiologist would be wise!! good luck to you......melanie
