Post-nevus removal on child's scalpMy little girl was born with a congenital nevus on her scalp a little bit larger than an egg, and the shape of an egg. We were encouraged to have two tissue expanders put in to stretch her scalp enough to have enough skin to close her head once they cut out the birthmark. We were encouraged to do this instead of a "staged excision"- just two surgeries, because the scar would be "better". When she was just over 9 months old we started the process (1 surgery, 6 expansions, and a final surgery to excise) we were finished just before her first birthday.
She is almost four years old now and the decision and scar haunt me. There are two scars in the shape of a 'T' on the side of her head. The scars are very wide and flat because her head grew at a fast rate due to her age- we weren't warned about this. It is basically a wide, bald T on her head and I can't imagine her going through life with it. I KNOW it could be worse, I am grateful for her health... I understand all of that, but I cannot let this go. Has anyone out there experienced this same scenario? If so, have you heard of any way of correcting this baldness issue (other than expanding her scalp again and creating a smaller scar)- that is what our jerk of a surgeon told us to do. Thanks.
