unwanted hair removal

Post a new topicby kypoteat on Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:30 pm

I am 30 y/o BF that has unsightly chin, cheek, and upper lip hair. It started when I was in middle school with 2-3 long fine chin hairs that I shaved the entire chin and neck stupily, and by the time I graduated high school I had spotting of hair growth it was course, dark and I had black dark spots from them, I was embarrassed of them, now I perfer to stay at home, I don't like when people complement me because I know the ugly side, I don't like eye contact, and I know when someone is looking at it, If I could stick my head in the sand or times I know this sounds bad put I'd perfer to cut my face off in hopes of new skin to grow back, Last year I went to laser treatment, it was a quick pain I'd deal with for the results and so low esteem, I had 3 treatments, I was driving a far distance to get there and I quit going because the dermatologist front disk service was uncaring. WHen I was recieving it I did have results the dark spots lightened, the hair didn't grow back as fast, I shaved maybe 2 times a month, my skin was smoothing out, and I was going some days without makeup!!!!!!!!! This is an inherited problem for me, and my hormones don't help, I do beleive there is a differnece in black and white skin, there is a difference in fine hair- it doesn't respond as well like upper lip hair, dark, course hair is for the treatment, and it's ineffective for gray hair. If there is anyone out there that understands me, talk to me. It cost me 170.00 a visit and was considered a full face procdure, and it took 5-7minutes, but worth the discomfort to increase the self-estem. I would advise it to anyone with hurt feelings, low estem, and just plan mad....... most diffinitely.

You are correct dark hair responds better to lasers then light or grey hair because the laser energy is taken up by the dark color heating up and destroying the hair follicle. The 1064 wave length (yag) is colorblind so you can treat dark and light skin which is important since other wavelengths may cause darking of lightening of dark skin. We use the Cutera laser for this reason. It usually takes at least 6 treatments spaced out about 4 to 6 weeks to substantially reduce the hair since some hair follicles may not be active at any one time, good luck

This Cutera laser, is it used by all dermatologist, I especially sought out an african american dermatologist because I thought he would specialize in black skin, he explained to me that white and black skin were different in tolerance and effectiveness. There is a dermatologist here in Winston Salem, NC that I want to try, or if you are formilar with a dermatologist here please refer name

Dear kypoteat,
I'm glad you found our forum so informative and helpful, I'm not sure what you mean by professional navigation. We do publish physician-developed and -monitored health education, there is a navigation that begins at the top left of this page, under 'Conditions'. I am also providing a link to our Cosmetic Procedures section.

Thank you for your continued support in using the healthchannels forum.

Best of luck to you.
